Virginia University Student Killed During Brawl
On July 17, 2005, Hampton police responded to a call about a large fight at a local restaurant. When officials arrived on the scene, they found 20-year-old Byron J. Bryant on the ground, bleeding from multiple stab wounds. Byron was taken to a local hospital but later died.
Through an investigation cops soon learned that the brawl was not gang-related. Byron Bryant was a gifted college student at Hampton University. And they also were surprised to find out that the student who allegedly stabbed Byron was Jihad Ramadan, a smart kid from a good family, and a fellow Hampton student.
Students Becoming Criminals?
Even though his name may evoke thoughts of extremism, Ramadan was just like any other college student with dreams and goals, but also eager to have a good time with his friends.
He came to college from New York and had no criminal record. But according to cops, some friction emerged between his group of friends, also from New York, and other students from Texas. Byron Bryant was from Houston. And what was supposed to be a night of fun turned into a fist fight that escalated when cops say Ramadan pulled out a knife and killed Byron.
Cops believe Ramadan fled to upstate New York after the murder, and are still hoping that he will do the right thing and turn himself in.
Victim's Mom Makes Call To Stop Thug Attitudes On Campus
After Byron Bryant was killed, his mother Rev. Cheryl Pitts-Bryant went on a mission: To convince as many kids as possible to stop bringing thug mentalities to college.
Rev. Pitts-Bryant has been touring several campuses since July 2005 to express her concern about how popular culture is influencing violent attitudes in young college students; and highlight the importance of encouraging them to focus on positive ideals.
She believes that campus violence is an issue that needs to be addressed and has created a foundation for this cause in honor of the memory of her son: The Byron James Project.
Thoughts? The above was the AMW archived description for this case. Ramadan was profiled on the August 26th, 2006 episode of America's Most Wanted. As far as I know, he is still at large. He initially fled to Upstate NY. However, considering proximity, I do wonder if he ultimately made it to Canada.
