A Pennsylvania heroin addict escaped from jail, killed a woman and took off in a stolen truck, authorities said.
Robert Crissman was still on the run Thursday night as a manhunt spread through the state.
“He has to be considered extremely dangerous,” Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi told reporters. “We believe he’s the prime suspect in one homicide, and everyone needs to be aware of that at this point.”
The 38-year-old was a trusty at the county jail in Rayburn Township, WTAE reported.
Locked up for a probation violation, he’d always been a small timer before — drug busts, theft — and he enjoyed the freedom to move around the facility.
He was supposed to be picking up meals to deliver to inmates when he walked out about 6:30 a.m. and fled, authorities said.
Crissman showed up a short time later on the doorstep of two acquaintances who let him in, apparently unaware he’d just escaped from jail.
They believe he’s dressed in blue jeans, a light-colored shirt and a light-colored hat.
He allegedly stole a 1999 maroon Chevrolet Silverado pickup with an extended cab. The rear fender is covered in red putty, police said.
The man left for work about 15 minutes later and returned home later to find the lifeless body of his girlfriend, 55-year-old Tammy Long, police said.
Law enforcement officials were stunned by the petty crook’s sudden turn toward violence.
“This is very uncharacteristic,” Andreassi said. “Although if it’s tied into his drug use and his need for drugs, that could explain why he did what he did.”
Crissman, who is 5-feet9 inches and weighs 150 pounds, may have armed himself, authorities said.
