Steven Clifford has been wanted in California since 2003 and wanted by the FBI since 2004. Below is the AMW archive description of his case (Clifford was a web-exclusive case):
Calif. Sex Offender Flees Before Sentencing
The FBI is on the hunt for convicted sex offender Steven Eugene Clifford. Clifford was a licensed chiropractor in Carnelian Bay, Calif. and cops say between the years of 1998-2001, he sexually assaulted several of his patients -- including a juvenile.
Clifford was arrested in January 2002 and faced a seventeen count felony complaint, alleging sexual assault. Cops say Clifford plead “No Contest” to three of the counts, but took off before sentencing.
Through the course of the investigation, authorities learned that this was not the first time Clifford had a run-in with the law. Before he opened his chiropractic practice in California, cops say he was licensed in Oregon. His license was suspended in 1995 after he was accused of inappropriate contact with a patient.
FBI agents believe Clifford took off for Mexico to avoid sentencing. Then, in 2006, there was a new development: Agents say Clifford’s attorney tried to negotiate a plea deal and surrender of his client. The FBI made it possible for Clifford to self-surrender in Mexico, but he never showed up.
FBI: Clifford May Be In Mexico
Clifford stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 165 pounds. He is a white male with strawberry blond/red hair and blue eyes. Clifford has scars on the lower parts of his arms from severe eczema or psoriasis. He may be using the nickames "Geno" and "Doc".
He was last seen driving a 2002 metallic tan Dodge Extended Cab XL-T truck with the Laramie package, towing a white fifth wheel camper. Cops say he loves boating and at one point owned motor boats and a row boat. He also owned a tan RV camper home.
The FBI says Clifford drinks heavily and is known to frequent nightclubs, especially spots where college kids tend to gather. His drinks of choice are Patron tequila and very expensive tawny port wines. They say he is extremely confident and his face tends to turn a strong red color when he gets excited. Cops think this severe change in coloring may be a great way to identify him.
Agents say Clifford may still be in Mexico, but they also have information linking him to Brazil, France, and Belgium. They believe he has a rudimentary knowledge of the French language. Cops say he is probably working as a chiropractor or acupuncturist, but may be working as a landscaper or mechanic.
The FBI has been hard at work tracking down Steven Eugene Clifford. Now, they need your tips to help bring him in. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please call our Hotline right away at 1-800-CRIME-TV. Remember, you can remain anonymous.
Thoughts? A few us have thought Clifford would be a good addition to the FBI's Top 10 list if a spot opens up, and with multiple victims I agree. I wish AMW gave this case a bit more attention as there are good clues to work with. It wouldn't surprise me if Clifford is still in Mexico. If Randy Yager can stay hidden there for 17 years anything is possibly, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
