CLEVELAND, Ohio – Detectives have no leads in an investigation into a shooting that claimed the lives of five people and injured a 9-year-old girl Nov. 21 at an East Side home.
Police Chief Calvin Williams said homicide detectives are working with the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, and members of the U.S. Marshals are on stand-by to capture any suspect quickly.
Detectives took a "truckload of evidence" from the home to be tested by the Medical Examiner's Office, police said.
"We know that there are people out there who have information about these cases," Williams said. "We want these people in jail as soon as possible."
A masked person entered the home at 1443 East 92nd Street about 7 p.m. and fatally shot 17-year-old Shaylona Williams, 60-year-old Lemon Bryant and 18-year-old Ja'rio Taylor.
"I have no clue who would do something so evil and wicked," Williams' mother Lashawnda Williams said. "When it first happened, nobody was telling us anything."
Shortly after, Sherita Johnson, the 41-year-old pregnant homeowner, dropped her 9-year-old daughter off to get some clothes from the house. When the girl went inside, the masked gunman fired two bullets, one of which grazed her chest.
The shooter then ran outside and shot Johnson. She was taken to University Hospital where both she and her unborn son were pronounced dead.
The shooting came during a weekend of violence in Cleveland where eight people were killed in three separate incidents. Two men were killed in another East Side shooting, and 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot to death by a Cleveland police officer.
Investigators are urging anyone with information about the East 92nd Street case to come forward and claim up to $27,000 in reward money available through Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County.
Tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by phone at 216-252-7463 or by texting TIP657 and your message to 274637.
Information can also be submitted to the Cleveland police's homicide detective unit at 216-623-5464.
Thoughts? Obviously it was a bit of a chaotic weekend overall in Cleveland when this happened. I know I'm going to sound like a broken record- but with not a lot to work with- I feel this is yet another case where it's only going to get solved if someone talks. It seems in many of these neighborhoods in cities with high-crime rates, there'd be a significant portion of crimes solved if only one person bothered to talk to Detectives. Obviously, we can hope police-community relations improve and hope we all can do better (no matter how good or bad the communication and whatever the reasons are for how well everyone communicates- good intentions and all- we can always strive to do better). But this is yet another case so tragic you'd think one person- whether they normally don't talk for personal reasons or reasons of fear- would go- ok, this one is messed up- five people died, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child, a teenager, a little girl almost got killed- I don't want that here- I have to say something. There's a $27,000 reward for information. That's a pretty good chunk of change for anyone willing to speak up.
