(Above photo credit: fbi.gov) Merced "Shadow" Cambero is wanted by the FBI on civil rights violations charges. He was aired on AMW in 2006 during a 15 SOS Of Shame profile. Cambero, a California native was a member of the Avenues gang in Highland Park, the Avenues being one of the oldest gangs in Los Angeles. The Avenues had a long-standing hatred of African-Americans and from 1995 to 2001, residents recounted incidents such as the attempted murder of a homeless man, racial slurs directed at a police officer, and human chalk outlines being drawn outside a home. On Apr 18, 1999, Cambero and five fellow Avenues gang members were patrolling the streets for rival gang members in a stolen van. Suddenly, they spotted a 38-year old African-American man named Kenneth Wilson making a u-turn and decided to kill him. Three of the gang members, including Cambero got out of the van and opened fire on Wilson, killing him. Since then, all five of Cambero's accomplices have been arrested in a 2004 indictment against the gang but Cambero remains at large. Thoughts? This is a very troubling and underrated case imo. Tony Rafael's "The Mexican Mafia" goes into an entire chapter in great detail as to how innocent African-Americans in Los Angeles were being killed by Hispanic gangs such as the Avenues, this case being the main focus. Due to the civil rights violation charges and the $20,000 reward the FBI is offering, I've sometimes wondered if Cambero may one day make the FBI Top Ten List. As for his whereabouts, Cambero is probably in Mexico by now. www.fbi.gov/wanted/cei/merced-cambero-jr/viewwww.laweekly.com/2006-07-27/news/they-wanted-all-blacks-out/Admin Note #1: According to fbi.gov, if you have information on the whereabouts of Merced "Shadow" Cambero, then please contact your local FBI office www.fbi.gov/contact-us or submit a web tip at tips.fbi.govAdmin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

I wonder considering they tried to kill a black homeless man if this gang had anything to do with Carvell Baker's death.
I agree Cambero is likely in Mexico by now being he's a wanted fugitive.

I wonder considering they tried to kill a black homeless man if this gang had anything to do with Carvell Baker's death. The only issue I have with the Avenues theory in relation to Carvell Baker's murder is that the Avenue's are mainly active in Northeast Los Angeles, while Baker was murdered in West Los Angeles. That doesn't mean however that a different Latino gang operating in that area had similar views on how to racially victimize innocent African-Americans.

I believe he was listed as FBI's case of the week. Wonder if that's what generated his location. Great news nonetheless!

P.S. Caris Ayala is COTW now, but Cambero was on there the other day.

Great capture and it's great they are putting Ayala in the most designated section COTW. Interesting how 2 cold case fugitives were arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cambero was sentenced to 20 years under a plea deal. Even the judge seemed to indicate he felt the sentence was too lenient, but apparently the victims' families agreed to a deal. I think even John Walsh says he sometimes encourages families of murder victims to accept a plea deal for a defendant, even if it means less time, to spare the pain of a trial and re-living the agony, since nothing will bring their loved one back anyway. Can't lie and say I'm not extremely disappointed with Cambero's light sentencing though. www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Fugitive-Gang-Member-20-Year-sentence-Race-murder-484533831.html

Wasn't the Judge's fault, he had no choice because of the plea deal. You want to blame anyone, blame the DA I guess.
