Aspiring N. California Musician Hoodwinked By 'Friend'
Kevin Prater's friends and family called him "Goofy", "because he would always just make silly faces, crack jokes, and ... make you laugh," says his mother, Robin.
The talented 20-year-old graduated from San Leandro High School near Oakland in 2008.
The day he graduated, he was "dancing and skipping on the stage and bouncing around. When they called his name, he put his hands in the air ... and then danced down all the steps," says Kevin's father, Kevin. "He came down the aisle and greeted everybody. He was just real excited about graduating."
Kevin was immensely talented and wanted to take all of that excitement with him into his career.
"Kevin enjoyed music," says Robin. "He wanted to be a rap star.
But rapping wasn't his only love.
"He wanted to learn how to control music, engineer music, and to produce music," says Kevin.
But all of his dreams were quickly, and violently dashed in September 2010.
On a late summer's evening, cops say an old high school friend of Kevin's committed a treasonous act more commonplace in a Greek tragedy than in modern day suburban California.
Det. Bauer has recently learned that Stancampiano has ties to Oswego, New York and Palmetto, Fla.
Tracy Cops: Botched Robbery Leads To Murder
In the early evening hours of Sept. 15, 2010, records show that Kevin's friend, Edgar, called him many, many times.
When he finally answered the phone, cops tell AMW Edgar pleaded for Kevin to pick him up. Seeing as Kevin was such a nice guy, he agreed to do so, and his girlfriend went with him.
After they picked Edgar up from an isolated, dead-end street, the group headed to a local grocery store so Kevin's girlfriend could grab a bite to eat. When she re-entered the car, cops say Edgar asked Kevin to double back and give a ride to another friend in need. Again, Kevin obliged.
When the trio rolled up to the dead-end street, Edgar's friend hopped into the backseat of the car.
But just as Kevin put the car in gear, a man wearing a hoodie ran from the bushes and pointed a large rifle at Kevin's head. It was at that moment that cops tell AMW that Kevin's "friend" Edgar turned on him.
According to reports, Edgar and his buddy held Kevin down while the gunman tried to rob him of his watch, wallet, rings and car. But Kevin fought back against his attacker, grabbing the rifle's barrel. During the struggle, the gun went off, striking Kevin in the chest and hitting his lung.
When the shot rang out, everyone dove from the car, which quickly accelerated down the street as Kevin's foot slammed on the gas. For four blocks, the car sped unobstructed, until it crashed into a fire hydrant and a metal fence.
Right after impact, the local 911 call center was flooded with reports of a car crash -- but by the time first responders arrived, it was too late. Kevin died from his injuries an hour later at a nearby hospital.
Two Suspects Jailed, One Remains On The Lam
When Kevin's girlfriend made her way over to the crash scene, she let first responders know that Kevin was shot during a failed robbery attempt. As the night went on, she helped officers ID Kevin's friend Edgar.
The next day, Edgar Canseco was taken into custody without incident. Once they had him, it didn't take long for them to learn the names of the other two players involved in Kevin's murder: West Side Tracy Norteño gang members Emmanuel Mathew "Manny" Mendoza and James Peter "Flacco" Stancampiano.
Through their investigation, cops learned "Manny" Mendoza was Edgar's friend that Kevin went to go pick up, and Stancampiano was the gunman who ruthlessly took Kevin's life.
Prior to the day of the botched robbery, Stancampiano only had a handful of minor violations on his juvenile record. There was nothing in his past that would lead cops to believe he was capable of committing murder. At the time of the shooting, he was even enrolled in classes pursuing his GED. Now cops say that upon any conviction for Kevin's murder, he'll have all the time in the world to further his education from behind bars.
As for Mendoza, he has a long history of violence, including charges for resisting arrest, concealment and possession of a knife, and assault with a deadly weapon, to name of a few.
For the longest time, Tracy Police Detective Tim Bauer Mendoza believed Mendoza was hiding out in El Paso, Texas or Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. And he was right.
In October 2011, more than a year after going on the run, Mexican authorities took him into custody and expelled him from the Republic after determining he was in their country illegally. On October 2, 2011, he was placed into the grasp of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in El Paso, Texas, and eventually transported back to Tracy to face justice.
Stancampiano might be in Mexico, as well. Investigators believe he's not in California any longer, though there is a slight possibility that he could be on the East Coast. Det. Bauer has learned that Stancampiano has ties to Oswego, New York and Palmetto, Fla.
Thoughts? I was thinking about this case the other day when I realized shockingly we never profiled Stancampiano on here despite him having a full-profile during AMW's last-ever season on Fox (and making my 2011 personal top 10 list). His possible locations above are listed as the East Coast as he has ties to Florida and Upstate New York but as mentioned above he might be in Mexico as well. Stancampiano's birthdate is 3/17/93 and the alleged crime was in 2010 so it seems he was only 17 at the time of the alleged murder- but apparently is being charged as an adult. What I do know is for a guy who was only 17 when he disappeared to successfully stay on the run this long, he must be getting help. I am NOT accusing his family. Perhaps it can be a friend or fellow gang member. But trust me, this guy is getting help from somewhere. Let's take him down. Call any of the numbers in his fugitive profile if you know where Stancampiano is.
