Maura Murray went missing in New Hampshire 10 years ago. Her case was aired on the Investigation Discovery show Disappeared.
In February 2004, Maura was a student who was set to have a credit card fraud charge dismissed due to good behaviour. While working on Feb 5, she broke down in tears but didn't reveal to reason to anyone. On Feb 7, she was driving back to her father's motel when she crashed his car, her father determined the damage was covered by his insurance. On Feb 9, she told her work supervisor and school facility that there was a death in her family and she would be off for a week, there was no death in her family at the time. She then withdrew $280 from an ATM and bought $40 worth of alcohol, footage showed that she was alone at the time.
Later that evening, a woman heard a noise outside her home and found Maura's car up against a snowbank. Most of Maura's possessions were found inside the car, except her debit cards, credit cards and cell phone, none of which were ever used again. A school bus driver noticed a woman who was cold and shivered but told him not to call the police. A massive search was then launched in the area and investigators at the time thought she was upset or suicidal. At the end of 2004, a man gave Maura's father a knife and claimed that his brother and his brother's girlfriend acted suspiciously after Maura disappeared. Police never did a through investigation into the knife as they couldn't determine if it was involved in a crime. In Oct 2006, cadaver dogs went "bonkers" when they searched a home to the possible presence of human remains a few miles from where Maura's car was found, however no remains were located.
Thoughts? This is a very weird case. Judging by her actions before she disappeared, I have to suspect that she was going through some type of emotional distress or something was really bothering her. The question is, whatever became of Maura after her car was found. Did she die from exposure to the elements and searchers missed her body? I don't know what to make about the man who gave Maura's father the knife and his claims.
I should also mention that an AMW producer said that the show declined to air Maura's case because "they only air missing adults if there's clear evidence of a crime." If you count commercial break airings, that is rather debatable, but I feel that AMW at time felt that she had left of her own accord and it wasn't likely that a crime had been committed.
